Wendy Schmidt is President of The Schmidt Family Foundation, which works to advance the development of clean energy and support the wiser use of natural resources. She established the Foundation’s 11th Hour Project in 2005, and in 2007 was a founding board member of Climate Central, an organization that combines an expert media team with the work of experts using the newest science to measure and describe climate change. Mrs. Schmidt is also President of The Nantucket Dreamland Foundation, and supports a vital downtown to serve island residents through her work at ReMain Nantucket, established in 2007.
With her husband, Eric, Wendy created the Schmidt Ocean Institute in 2009 to provide future opportunities aboard research vessels for urgent ocean studies. Before devoting her time to the public conversation about energy and the environment, Mrs. Schmidt worked in high-tech marketing communications at Sun Microsystems and later operated a design business specializing in residential interiors.
Wendy earned an M.A. in Journalism from The University of California at Berkeley, and a B.A. magna cum laude from Smith College. She serves on the boards of GRIST, The Nantucket Dreamland Foundation, The Natural Resources Defense Council, The California Academy of Sciences, and The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute.
