Dr. Susan Klosterhaus Honored with Women in Sustainability Leadership Award
Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute VP Science and Certification one of ten sustainability leaders recognized by Green Building & Design magazine
Institute Vice President of Science and Certification Dr. Susan Klosterhaus has been honored with a Women in Sustainability Leadership Award (WSLA) from Green Building & Design.
Now in their sixth year, Green Building & Design created the awards to celebrate the achievements of women who are making lasting change. The awards’ ultimate goal is to create a global hub that identifies and connects the most powerful women at the forefront of sustainability. WSLA looks to recognize and advance these top-level female sustainability executives who can then, in turn, support younger women with dreams of reaching such levels of success.
“I am delighted to be named by Green Building & Design as one of the recipients of this year’s Women in Sustainability Leadership Awards,” said Klosterhaus. “I am honored to be recognized as one of the many accomplished women working to create a positive future for people and our planet.”
Susan Klosterhaus leads the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Program, oversees the development of the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard, and serves as the Chair of the Institute’s Certification Standards Board. Before joining the Institute in 2012, she conducted research on the fate and toxicity of chemical contaminants in the environment for more than 15 years. She was the lead organic contaminant chemist at the San Francisco Estuary Institute, where she conducted water quality monitoring projects to support environmental management and policy development for San Francisco Bay. At SFEI she led research on contaminants of emerging concern in aquatic environments and developed an expertise in the identification and analysis of flame retardant chemicals used in consumer products. Prior to working at SFEI, Susan was a research scientist in laboratories at the University of Maryland and the University of South Carolina. Susan earned her Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Maryland and her M. S. in Public Health and B. S. in Marine Science from the University of South Carolina. “Susan’s leadership of the Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Program, including the development of the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard is mission-critical to our organization as we work to establish and advance the world’s leading science-based, multi-industry standard for making and verifying safe and circular materials and products,” stated Peter Templeton, president and CEO of the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute. “I am delighted to congratulate her on this well-deserved recognition.”
The sixth annual WSLA will be presented in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council and HMTX Industries at this year’s Greenbuild International Conference and Expo in Atlanta on November 19. Winners were selected by a judging panel that includes Rochelle Routman of HMTX Industries and chair of the WSLA Alumni Group, Kimberly Lewis of the USGBC, and Chris Howe and Laura Heidenreich of gb&d.
