Recent Cradle to Cradle Certified® Achievements in Textiles, Apparel & Footwear

Commitment to products that are safe, circular and equitable continues to grow in the fashion industry, with brands placing focus and taking action on circularity, clean energy and social fairness. Achieving Cradle to Cradle Certified® for its products provides tangible evidence of a company’s action on sustainability, with internal systems and supply chains often undergoing significant transformations in order to conform with the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard. Here are some latest highlights from the sector.

The first Cradle to Cradle Certified® high-heeled shoes are made by Danish company Roccamore. Their RAINFOREST COLLECTION I, comprising of pumps and boots, achieved Cradle to Cradle Certified® Bronze level in 2021. The shoes are handmade in Italy and use biodegradable leather.

Italian outdoor and leisurewear company Napapijri has been manufacturing its Circular Series jacket entirely from Nylon 6 Yarn recycled from discharged fishing nets. The jacket is 100% recyclable from postconsumer to econyl yarn, and the company has implemented a take-back program. With new styles available every season, the Circular Series jacket is Cradle to Cradle Certified at the Gold level.

Austrian market leader for luxury skinwear, Wolford, has been developing environmentally compatible products in both the biodegradable and technically recyclable categories for the past years. A recent collaboration between Wolford and ADIDAS BY STELLA MCCARTNEY resulted in Cradle to Cradle Certified Gold knit tights being featured as part of their Agent of Kindness collection.

A collaboration between fashion brand Lee® Jeans and denim manufacturers Artistic Milliners was aimed at creating a line of 100% recyclable jeans with a perfect fit for the planet. The resulting styles, the Aureola and the Nymph, are Cradle to Cradle Certified respectively at the Gold and Bronze level. Every component of the jeans is 100% recyclable, the 100% organic cotton is dyed during a process using 58% less water than traditional dyeing processes and energy consumption is minimized throughout the production process.

Also Cradle to Cradle Certified at the Gold level is Bananatex®, the world’s first durable, technical fabric made purely from the naturally grown Abacá banana plants. Cultivated in the Philippine highlands within a natural ecosystem of sustainable mixed agriculture and forestry, the plant is self-sufficient, requires no pesticides, fertilizer or extra water. These qualities have allowed it to contribute to reforestation in areas once eroded due to monocultural palm plantations, whilst enhancing biodiversity and the economic prosperity of its farmers.

As part of its circularity journey, H&M’s latest newborn collection has been Cradle to Cradle Certified® at the Gold level. The clothing and accessories featured in the collection are made from 100% organic cotton, featuring “room to grow” details. Once they are worn out, the pieces are compostable in a home compost.
