The way we use our materials today will define the world we inhabit in the future.

Materials are reimagined with the help of emerging technologies and new collaborations in order to create a circular future together. How can we speed up the transition towards a circular economy while bringing about a more caring and truly sustainable society? What role does the Cradle to Cradle philosophy play?

The Cradle to Cradle Café will take place during MaterialDistrict Rotterdam on Tuesday 17th of March from 11.00 – 13.00 hrs.The seminar will be in English and moderated by Caroline Kruit, DAX Creative Company.

Presentation 1: Prof. Peter Luscuere MSc, Delft University of Technology

What is the role for materials in a ‘Circular Economy’?

A straightforward definition of circularity is renewability: not only for energy, but for all resources including air, water, top soil, space and materials. Biological materials are renewable by them selves they grow. But how do we apply the concept of renewability to technical materials?

Presentation 2: Dr. Christina Raab, Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute

Materials in a circular economy: how cradle to cradle principles are driving innovations

Safe and circular materials play an important role in the development of green and healthy buildings. The presentation will give an update on the activities of the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute and reveal insights into the upcoming new version of the Cradle to Cradle Certified product standard. It will also demonstrate several recent examples where the C2C framework has accelerated implementation of sustainability goals, spurred new product innovations and drove transformation across the value chain.

Presentation 3: Reinder Bakker, Overtreders W

    The Material Choreographer

Overtreders W. directs material flows and questions the practice and traditions of the entire construction industry. Renting materials and products is preferred over buying them, waste is used as a building material and recycled plastic is built into new facades. The origin of materials seems to be just an afterthought in the building industry, a lot of waste is created towards and during building. Recent projects of Overtreders W show projects made with borrowed or waste materials, in order to have as little impact on the environment as possible.
