Cradle to Cradle Certified Products
The Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Product Standard is a multi-attribute, continuous improvement methodology that provides a path to manufacturing healthy and sustainable products for our world. It is administered by the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation InstituteSM. Because the Standard rewards achievement in five categories and at five levels of certification, C2C Certified represents the most comprehensive product quality mark available.
The methodology was originally created by McDonough Braungart Design Chemistry, LLC (MBDC) in cooperation with EPEA Internationale Umweltforschung GmbH, and has been developed and practiced over the past 20 years. Since product certification began in 2005, more than 150 companies have adopted the methodology and over 400 certifications have been issued for Cradle to Cradle Certified products. These companies include industry giants such as Steelcase, Herman Miller, Desso, and a government leader, the United States Postal Service.
In 2012, MBDC licensed the Cradle to Cradle Certified Product Standard to the Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute in an effort to scale up the number of products that meet the expectations of a Cradle to Cradle world. The Cradle to Cradle Certified Products Program is now administered by the Institute, which will ensure that product certification is an independent and transparent process.
Not all Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM rewards achievement in five categories (Material Health, Material Reutilization, Renewable Energy and Carbon Management, Water Stewardship, and Social Fairness) and at five levels (Basic, Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum). Products certified at the Basic level have achieved a minimum set of requirements that show a commitment to future assessment and optimization, while Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Platinum represents a product ideally designed and produced for a Cradle to Cradle® world.
Product certification is available to a wide range of products across many industries. To get certified, an applicant must submit data to an Accredited Assessment Body to get a product assessed against the requirements of the Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Product Standard. The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute reviews all final certification documents and issues certification.
The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute was founded by William McDonough and Michael Braungart to assume independent responsibility for the administration of the Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Products Program and the development of the Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Product Standard. Version 3.0 of the Standard has been licensed to the Institute and governance of the Standard has been transferred to the Certification Standards Board.
The Institute lists all Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM products in the Product Registry. Certifications are listed with their level, expiration, and certification protocol version. Proprietary information is kept confidential, though product manufacturers and their supply chain are encouraged to be as transparent as possible.
