The Cradle to Cradle Products Innovation Institute, in partnership with Make It Right, launched its first ever Cradle to Cradle Product Innovation Challenge in November 2012.
The Challenge seeks to inspire innovators to recreate and retool the way products are designed, manufactured and consumed. The goal of the contest is to identify and reward highly creative and innovative product concepts for healthy, sustainable, affordable housing. The competition is aimed at manufacturers who seek to design and manufacture with superior standards as outlined in the Cradle to Cradle CertifiedCM Products Program.
The prize is strategically aligned with national and international trends in green building that are redefining sustainability beyond traditional indicators such energy efficiency to also include consideration for improved human and environmental health.
144 applicants were screened by Cradle to Cradle certification experts, toxicologists from ToxServices, and building professionals from Make It Right. These judges selected 10 finalists who are now being considered for the $250,000 cash prize. Three winners will share the cash prize, with 1st place receiving $125,000, 2nd winning $75,000 and 3rd getting $50,000.
Jury members who will select the winners include executives from Make It Right, US Green Building Council, Google, First Community Housing, The Honest Company, Schmidt Family Foundation, Delta Development Group in the Netherlands, and GIGA in China. A full listing of the judges is available here.
